Favorite Day! One of my favorite books of all time is The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle. Creativity truly comes alive in this story. There are talking animals, invented creatures, and nightmares about boring biscuits. Which means cookies, because another delightful part of this book is the author is from Ireland. There are some words, and the general setting, that make you feel like this can’t be happening in the US. The plot of the story explains why a very disgusting thing happens to most Americans, though. Not just Americans, but probably any 1st world country with pets.

I refuse to deny you any enjoyment of this book, so I won’t give much else away. I will say that I used this book in my homeroom class to develop a sense of community. Because of the uncommon phrases, we had a shared vocabulary that the rest of the school did not have. When passing one another in the halls, I could say one of those words or phrases, and the homeroom student would be the only one who knew what I was talking about. Not a secret code, but a connection between us. It is a funny book, as well. It’s a nice way to start or end a day. Light hearted, mischievous, and creative. Everything you need to make any day a little bit better.
Thank you, R. Doyle, for making our world a little more creative!
